Letters to the Chief Minister

11th May 2007

Dear Chief Minister,

Through this letter, I would like to draw your kind attention regarding the recently amended Karnataka Shops & Commercial Establishments (Amendment) Act-2007 passed in the last legislature session.

The Hon'ble Minister for labor Sri. lqbal Ansari in his recent press meets has made it clear about the act that except women's working in I.T, B.T and related industries, the working hours for women is limited to 8 at night.

I strongly urge the state government to review this decision for the following reasons. It is unfair and illogical to prevent Women from working. Karnataka, that too, Bangalore is home to many industries that employ women in manufacturing, hospitality, airlines, media etc., and women must have the unquestioned & unfettered right to work

In any event it cannot be the government case that because of security and safety people stay at home. It is in fact the primary responsibility of any elected government to provide security to all its citizens and it is the right of every citizen to pursue work for his or her self and family and as a result be a contributor to the economy.

I also would like to bring to your kind notice that National, State women commission and many other social women groups have all opposed this move of the government.

Hence once again I request you to reconsider the stand of the government immediately.

With regards,
Thanking you
Rajeev Chandrasekhar

Shri. HD Kumaraswamy
Hon'ble Chief Minister
Government of Karnataka
